A Monument to Modern Art

The ceremony for the unveiling of the Grand Prix memorial goes off without a hitch; it was a small event, in that it wasn't much of an event at all. It took place in the morning and the early afternoon of the 15th. The Mayor showed up to give a speech in honor of the dead, which everyone agreed dragged on for a minute too long. His secretary and the law enforcement were honored once more in what they could do, then they lamented what they could not, and members of the grieving families were allowed front and foremost positions during the whole affair. Security was tight, for fear of retaliation, but nothing came.

The monument itself was elegant in its simplicity: a wall on the outside of the stadium had been put aside for it, the material replaced with something akin to black marble, and the names of all of the deceased listed along its surface. At the top, in the center of the wall was an engraving of a lion, its fangs bared not in hostility, but protection; and just underneath it was Bunrakuken Karube's name, along with his tournament title, praising him as the Invincible Champion of the Persona Grand Prix.

All in all, a rather mundane proceeding, though sobering for the populace. It was broadcasted on the airwaves live, and there was hardly even a hair out of place. The entire city thereafter seemed to be rather quiet that afternoon; the concert revived the life of its crowd, but even the 13th Hour seemed to be less abuzz than normal for the districts away from the music. Though the hour picked up back to its regular pace as the night wore on.

What was really interesting, now, was what happened afterwards.

Overnight, the monument had been vandalized. Nothing was broken; but before anyone knew it, everyone that happened upon the Aries district found the monument had been covered in graffiti. Beside the engraved lion was two quickly painted, blank expression masks, with many more of the the same thing littered all over the name wall and on the edges. Some were theatre masks, some were half-masks, but they were all simple shapes that could be recognized as false faces, and were likely done very quickly. In the middle of the name wall, underneath the center crowned with the lion's image, was one particular image and equation:

Overnight, that same image and equation had appeared all over the city, not just on the monument. People woke up to it in nooks and crannies, abandoned alleyways, old buildings, new buildings-- anywhere there was an empty surface, and sometimes even where there wasn't. Though the city had no lack of graffiti in the more grungy districts, the same equation had found itself even in the cleaner government locations and shopping areas. With so much crime and activity already present in the city, no one could pinpoint the source of the vandals. Though the more savvy knew what was already heavily implied.

With this new anomaly dotting walls and streets, the sober stiffness of the city carried into the next morning (though to be sure some of them were simply partied out), as if all the civilians were still holding their breath. But as they slowly started to release that breath, cautious and wary murmurs could be heard throughout the city for at least the whole weekend. Though no one seemed to dare to talk about the defacements at more than a whisper, they all seemed to share a common concern--

What did it mean?

(OOC: Remember, though the monument is unveiled on the 15th, the graffiti does not appear until the morning of the 16th.)

"That's not what I'm getting at," Shou answers sharply, leaning in toward Narumi with a comically-annoyed expression on his face. "You're trying to knock my agency, aren't you, jerkass?!"

He might know the actual meaning behind the slang, but it sounded like a backhanded compliment to him!
sageprincess: (Slightly horrified)

boys pls

Sorry, but we have to interrupt your regularly scheduled manchildren arguing for a very important announcement.

"... Detectives?"

It seems while you two were busy arguing, this lady here has been watching the absurd spectacle and trying to get your attention. Are you going to keep her waiting?
amodernman: (eheh no I wasn't hitting on your wife)

bustedddddd

At that, Narumi shrugged. "I'll have you know, that unlike a certain fledgling around here I--"

Aaaand that was about when he realized that-- oh, there was a dame standing right there.

At which point, Narumi immediately withdrew any and all apathy and hostility and looked at Zelda with a smile on his face. "Ah-- sorry about that doll-face."

He took his hat off his head and bowed to her with a small grin. "Detective Shouhei Narumi, at your service-- how can I help you--?"

"FLEDGLING?!"

Wait, wait. Distraction. A very pretty one at that. Shoutarou straightens up from his bickering, then adjusts his tie.

And then he oh-so-calmly shoves Narumi out of the way with one hand, then doffs his hat at Zelda. "Detective Hidari Shoutarou, at your service, miss. How can I help you?"
sageprincess: (Cordial curiosity)

Zelda's eyes follow Narumi as he's casually flung out of the way, and in that moment she begins to wonder if this was actually a good idea. Maybe she should go back to the magic COMP network lady...

Well. She's here and she finally has their attention, she might as well she what they can offer.

"I am looking for someone. I know his face and his voice, but I do not know his name," she says, glancing between the two with only slight uncertainty reaching her eyes. "Searching for him could be dangerous, but I had hoped at least one of you would be willing to help me."
amodernman: (Kichou's a dumb name)

Narumi stumbled as Shoutarou shoved him, but it certainly wasn't enough to deter him! He regained his balance and-- instead of completely shoving Shou out of the way, he simply pushed himself back into his previous position and elbowed Shoutarou in the side while he put his hat back on with a smile.

"Heheh, if it's information on the big cats in the city you need, that just happens to be my speciality," He answered, adjusting his tie with a smirk.

good god these two are embarrassing

Shoutarou makes a quiet 'oof' noise as he gets elbowed, and stumbles just a bit before replacing his own hat. Without missing a beat, though he plants one hand on his hip and wags the pointer finger of his free hand at Narumi. "Ah-ah, Mister Narumi - she wants this person found, not information on them." He straightens up, and takes that finger and swipes it along the brim of his own hat. "And that happens to be my specialty."
sageprincess: (Song of Storms)

oh my god you guys I can't

"One would assume one would naturally lead to the other..." she mutters quietly. If they're trying to compete for her interest, they're not doing a great job, sorry to say. Still, she procures a folded piece of paper, which she holds up for both children men to see.

"I believe his name - or, at least, an alias of his - is on this list. Given my current knowledge of the city and the resources at my personal disposal, this is all I can come up with on my own. Will it be enough to begin an investigation?"
amodernman: (Did you put something new in my coffee)

PICTURE OF PROFESSIONALISM

"See, you heard the little lady; one naturally leads into the other! Finding a person is easy--" He says with a cheeky tone, giving a dismissive wave of his hand, "--identifying them is probably too far beyond your level."

Despite the constant ribbing, he takes a moment to lean down and look at the list of names with..actual seriousness! Go figure! "Hm... These are the names of Grand Prix competitors, aren't they?" At the least, he recognized their titles.

"On the contrary-- should be more than enough."
thisclinchesit: (THIS ISN'T MY TRUMP CARD D:)

Unfortunately the picture is a really bad photocopy from a coloring book, colored badly.

Shoutarou makes a somewhat pouty face as he gets a bit of egg on his face. "Well, I merely assumed that any information she wants, she would see to getting once we find the person in question, as she only asked to find the person initially, buuut..."

He takes a look at the paper, and finds the names rather perplexing to say the least. Narumi's commentary drives a nail into a proverbial coffin for his chances of netting a case here.

"...ah, yeah. Some sort of big mess that happened before I arrived, from what I've heard."
